| Yangjaecheon (Stream), which is 15.6
kilometers long, is one of the tributaries to the Han River that originates from
Gwanaksan (Mountain) and Cheonggyesan (Mountain). The stream flows into Gwacheon
before reaching Seoul¡¯s Gangnam area. The old name of Yangjaecheon (stream) was
Gongsucheon (Stream). However, because the shallows are formed in the meandering
stream of the confluence of Yangjaecheon and are frequently visited by cranes,
the shallows are called Hangnyeoul (Crane Shallows). |

Seonjeongneung is composed of Seolleung
and Jeongneung. Seolleung is the resting place of King Seongjong, the nineth
king of Joseon Dynasty, and Queen Jeonghyeon, his wife. Jeongneung is the tomb
of Jungjong, the 11th king of Joseon. Seolleung and Jeongneung, combined, are
called Seonjeongneung. The tomb area is more popularly called Seolleung.
King Seongjong was a grandson of King Sejo, and the second son of King
Deokjong (posthumous title). King Seongjong was born in the third year of the
reign of King Sejo (1457), was enthroned at the age of 13 (1469), and died when
he was 38 years old (1494). During the 25 years of his reign, King Seongjong
achieved many things, including advances in learning and reorganization of the
governmental system. Seonjeongneung, which is Historic Site Number 199, is
relatively unknown, although it is located in an urban district. The site can
thus provide serene respite to urban dwellers. |

| The name Apgujeong-dong originates from
Apgu, the pen name of Han Myeong-hoe, a famous statesman during the reign of
King Sejo. A pavilion named Apgujeong was located in this area. Apgu refers to
¡°abandoning worldly life, living on the riverside, and befriending seagulls.¡±
The name ¡°Rodeo Street¡± probably originates from ¡°Rodeo Drive,¡± world-famous
fashion street located in Beverly Hills, California. Apgujeong Rodeo Street is
crowded with luxurious clothing shops, fashion stores that carry imported
brand-name accessories, wedding dress shops, and cafes. Latest fashion trends
can be grasped at a glance at Rodeo Street, which seems to drive the fashion of
young people. A culture of the masses and the young is driving the changes on
Rodeo Street. |

Bongeunsa (temple) was built by
Yeonhoe-guksa, a high Buddhist priest, in the 10th year (794) of the reign of
Silla King Wonseong, and was originally called Gyeonseongsa (Temple). In 1498,
the temple, which is located to the east of Seolleung, went through a
remodeling, thanks to the support of Queen Jeonghyeon, the wife of King
Seongjong, and was renamed Bongeunsa. The depository of the temple houses 3,379
printing blocks of 13 different types of Buddhist scriptures, including
Avatamsaka-sutra and Vajracchedika-Prajnaparamita-Sutra. The calligrapher who
wrote the characters on the hanging board of the depository is Chusa Kim
Jeong-hui. On September 9 of the lunar calendar, a ceremony called
Jeongdaebulsa is held. Participating Buddhists read aloud verses on the
dharma-nature,while carrying printing blocks on their heads as they march along
Beopgyedo, the Diagram of the Dharma-dhatu. Bongeunsa (Temple) is a Buddhist
temple that is 200 years old. As the head temple of Seonjong (Contemplative
School) Buddhism, Bongeunsa contributed to the renaissance of Buddishm during
the Joseon Dynasty. Located in the center of Seoul, the temple still leads
Buddhism in today¡¯s Korea. |
